Post urine odor
My loved one is incontinent nearly all of the time, but yesterday he went to the bathroom to urinate and was fairly successly in his aim. After he got his pants up, he picked up the ban deodorant and rubbed all over the front of the jeans. I asked what he was doing, and he replied quite lucidly that he was getting rid of the urine smell and that there ought to be something better to use. I agree. Do you all know of any little spray thing that we could use when he's leaked a little but not enough to change clothes? Don't say change clothes for even just a drop, cause that's not going to happen unless I'm there. He can't do it by himself, and the caregivers don't notice, and usually he can't tell them. Thanks Melinda

Febreeze fabric deodorizer works really well at eliminating odors from fabrics. There are also other brands. Might be worth a shot.

Milinda,
What I used was a peri-anal spray I bought in a medical supply place, it helped, or you could make a mild solution of fabreze and put in a spray bottle.

I do hope these other solutions work because I'm not aware of anything that will eliminate urine odor from clothing that someone has on.

It's odd to me that your husband is aware of this odor because typically those with LBD have lost the sense of smell.

I thought the same thing , how odd it was that your LO could smell the odor, not sure if these suggestions will work but I used them because I was aware of the odor more than he ever was.

I remember early on in LBD with bathroom issues becoming a problem I was going nuts in the one bathroom he used with a strong urine odor I would go in several times a day and scrub and clean the area all around the tiolet area, just couldn't get rid of the odor and one day on my hands and knees I realized it was the shower curtain, he had missed the bowl and hit the curtain , how many times I don't know for sure but I can tell you I ripped it down washed it and when I hung it back up I always had to make sure it was pushed the other way of the tub.

Here's another funny story, I always used the moist wipes in the bathrooms, this was also much earlier in the illness and Jim came out and told me we were running out I needed to get more and I said that's crazy I just put that in there this morning, so I went in and checked and the box was full and I walked out to where Jim had been and showed him it was full , he said no not them the ones on the floor in the corner, well folks he was using the Clorox wipes I kept in there for quick clean ups not on him of course but for the bathroom, I still laugh about that day! Its a wonder he didn't end up with a heck of a rash!!

Irene,

Hahaha the Clorox Wipes is a great story! Thanks, that started my day with a good laugh...no wonder Jim didn't have an odor ... he was Clorox clean! I am still laughing, that hit my funny bone. You know...when they show those funny commericals on some of the shows?? This would be right up there with the best of them. lol

Under a more serious note: this is why I have 2 and as many as 5 tubs of wash a day. Only way I found to not have odor is keep changing.

Dianne,
I am glad someone got a kick out of that I still laugh about it! But on a more serious note the only way to keep the odor at bay is constant changing of clothes which is not always possible but I was also very lucky we used the condom cather at night so that saved a lot of wash loads, I bought online the hospital pads that were cloth and they were costly but well worth it I used them every where he sat.

Irene,

I am still laughing about it. Told my LO when he got up and was using the urinal and he got a good laugh too. So I told him..better be careful which of these wipies you are using or you too could be Clorox clean.. :) He was still laughing through breakfast. He seemed comforted that humour stays with you. (he was always a big joker/kidder and misses that..it just doesn't come out funny anymore and I think he misses the laughs)
He is up...on the old meds...and so far so good. Hoping it lasts...I miss having our conversations and its so nice to have him like this...for now. I think rather than looking to prolong his life...the quality of the moment of life for him is best.

Hoping you enjoy a great Saturday.
Dianne

Thanks everyone, I'll try the Fabreeze. He can't smell, hasn't for years. I think he must have seen the damp on his jeans. But the whole thing shows more insight than I thought he could have. Weird, he has his wonderful response to his environment and it's about peeing. Just to bring you up to date, he has really gone downhill the last several weeks, still knows me and other family members but that's about it.I almost crashed and burned. Well actually I did crash but didn't quite burn. I'm better now.

Dianne, Savor those moments because in the end that's what we have and I too love to joke around, always did but LBD made me way to serious over the yrs, even my kids tell me I no fun anymore!
I hope you have a great Saturday too, its rainy here and very damp, they say until mid week then maybe a warm up again, I hate dreary days but I do have plenty to do and my daughter is coming for dinner tonight with her son, the SIL is working so it will be a nice quiet dinner, my son will be at his dinner at the Fire House they do a monthly dinner for all the firemen which is great only costs 3 bucks, wish I go and eat that cheap too LOL!

Melinda,
Its really hard when they make sudden declines, I am sorry , is anything going on for the decline or do you just think it is part of Lewy, One good thing I would like to share with you , I always remembered think that Jim wouldn't know us as time passed but honestly he knew us all until the very end, with the exception of times with the Capgras but that never lasted long.
When you say Crashed and almost burned I do hope you aren't talking about an accident???

Irene,

I am learning to savor those moments more and more. And its so good to have a "real person" to talk to about our family, friends and laugh at some of the silly things happening to all of us and others. You are so right about becoming too serious...my children say the same to me. Spend a few days in our shoes. We all are doing the very best we can.

Hope weather turns nice again for you and spring comes...its been uplifting to look out of the windows at the flowering trees, bushes and plants. Enjoy a wonderful evening with your daughter...and tell her the Clorox story. :) If she has not heard it I am sure it would bring a laugh to her and a fond rememberance of her dad...and now he brought some laughter to others if only for this day.

You would just not believe...he is so close to normal right now...its almost scary. Walking well, talking makes sense, a little humorous too. No wonder they call this disease a roller coaster ride. When I look at my posts from the last few weeks....to this!!!!!! Unbelieveable!!!

melinda,

Glad you are feeling better. Sorry to hear about your LOs decline and your crashing. Certainly empathize with you as I have just been there too. Its so difficult to deal with the "down" periods of Lewy. Know we are here with an ear...if nothing more than to listen to you. ..and maybe give you a little uplift. (see Irenes story about Clorox for a giggle)
We too are just coming out of a huge downer. Think it was mostly due to change of meds...hope that is what it was. Total Chaos. Then today...back on the old meds...like a whole new person. I cannot fathom that one can go from almost total devastation to this. If I were not seeing this...I would not believe it.

Stay as strong as possible. You are doing a great job for your LO.

Dianne

Irene, that story about the clorox was priceless! Still laughing as I was catching up on my reading here.

Dianne, I have thought this all along, every since Henry was DXd that what you said 'rather than looking to prolong his life...the quality of the moment of life for him is best'. I felt like I was being unfair when I first thought this and the more that I read, the more that I agree with those first thoughts. Then a few days ago I had to go for cancer testing (the ultrasound RN said she couldn't see anything that the doctor would be looking for, so now I am waiting to see the gynecologist and get his report but so far looking good, prayer works!) My big worry was that something would happen to me before it happened to Henry and he would be left alone here and I honestly don't know how he would make it and he does not want to go into a home and that first statement came back to me and I now know that it is the right thing to be going for and praying for.

Walked into the bathroom yesterday after Jerome finished his usual hour on the toilet (don't ask, because I couldn't tell you) to find him spraying Windex on his hands to wash them. That taught me never to leave any container larger than the soap bottle on the sink. Thank god it wasn't Liquid Plumber!

As for deodorant, I caught Jerome a few times after I had dressed him spraying it under his arms -- right on the clothes. That's when I discontinued the short-lived experiment with spray-on deodorant (initiated at Jerome's request so he could try putting his own deodorant on).

And there was also the time he put clear gel toothpaste on his hair thinking it was for making your hair look shinier.

Our rule of thumb now -- out of sight, out of mind. If he sees it -- whatever it is -- he may use it -- whatever he thinks it might do.

But the Clorox wipes -- that one was classic! Thanks for sharing, Irene!
